Applying Solvent-based Adhesives in Cold Weather

Includes Mule-Hide Bonding Adhesive (EPDM), Mule-Hide TPO Bonding Adhesive, Mule-Hide PVC Bonding Adhesive, Low-VOC Bonding Adhesive, Low-VOC PVC Bonding Adhesive, AeroWeb Low-VOC Aerosol Contact Adhesive, and Bonding Adhesive 1168 (California only).

Temperature Tipping Point

The adhesive must be between 60 F and 80 F prior to application.

Care must be taken when the dew point drops to within 5 F of the ambient temperature, as condensation may form on the surface of the adhesive.

Guidelines and Best Practices

The adhesive will take longer to dry in cold weather.

It may take 24 hours or longer for cold material to be warmed to the proper temperature.

Solvents may separate when cold product is restored to a usable temperature. Always remix materials thoroughly prior to use and remix a minimum of twice daily.

Broom or roll the membrane immediately after bonding the sheet.

Failure to allow the product to properly flash off will cause the membrane to blister. If this occurs, allow the solvent to dissipate naturally for 4 to 5 days and then re-broom the membrane.

In cold temperatures, condensation may form on the surface of the adhesive, preventing the surfaces from bonding. If this happens, stop work until conditions improve and allow the adhesive to dry completely. Then apply another coat of adhesive or primer.

Note: The above are general guidelines. Please consult the relevant Product Data Sheet (PDS) for additional information.
