Installing EPDM in Cold Weather

Temperature Tipping Points

Cold-weather installation protocols should be followed when the ambient temperature is 40 F or lower.

Guidelines and Best Practices

Allow at least 30 minutes for any EPDM membrane to acclimate before installation—this step is especially critical for Self-Adhering EPDM.

Self-Adhering EPDM Temperature Guidelines:

  • The minimum installation temperature for Black Self-Adhering EPDM is 20°F and rising.
  • The minimum installation temperature for White Self-Adhering EPDM is 32°F and rising.

With Standard EPDM, MuleHide recommends using smaller, non-folded sheets during cold weather. They will relax more quickly and be easier to work with than large, folded sheets.

EPDM flashing products may require supplemental warming with a heat gun. Keep the heat gun away from flammable materials, such as cleaners, tape primers and adhesives.

Note: The above are general guidelines. Please consult the relevant Product Data Sheet (PDS) for more information about the specific membrane being used.
