Working with Low-Slope Roofing Materials When Temperatures Dip

Cold-Weather Installation Guide hero

Applying Solvent-based Adhesives in Cold Weather

Includes MuleHide Bonding Adhesive (EPDM), MuleHide TPO Bonding Adhesive, MuleHide PVC Bonding Adhesive, and Bonding Adhesive 1168 (California only).

Temperature Tipping Point

The adhesive should be between 60 F and 80 F prior to application.

Care must be taken when the dew point drops to within 10 - 15 F of the ambient temperature, as condensation may form on the surface of the adhesive. If this happens, stop work until conditions improve and allow the adhesive to dry completely. Then apply another coat of adhesive or primer. Note that various weather apps list the local dew point.

Guidelines and Best Practices

The adhesive will take longer to flash off in cold weather.

It may take 24 hours or longer for cold material to be warmed to the proper temperature.

Solvents may separate when cold product is restored to a usable temperature. Always remix materials thoroughly prior to use and remix a minimum of twice daily.

Broom the membrane immediately after bonding the sheet.

Failure to allow the product to properly flash off will cause the membrane to blister. If this occurs, allow the solvent to dissipate naturally for 4 to 5 days and then re-broom the membrane.

Note: The above are general guidelines. Please consult the relevant Product Data Sheet (PDS) for additional information.
