MULE-HIDE PRODUCTS CO., INC. INTRODUCES PRE-TAPED EPDM
Factory-controlled Production Improves Seam Quality, Reduces Installation Time
By Jennifer Neighbors

BELOIT, Wis. – New Mule-Hide® Pre-Taped EPDM from Mule-Hide Products Co. Inc. makes achieving wrinkle-free seams faster and easier.

The new membranes are now available at Mule-Hide distributors nationwide.

Application of the tape to the membrane in a factory-controlled environment ensures uniform width and thickness of the adhesive, resulting in more reliable seams with 30 percent greater peel and sheer strength and no entrapped air bubbles. Consistent factory placement of the tape – controlled to within plus or minus 1/8-inch – ensures the tape is positioned properly to achieve an optimal bond.

Time trials show that factory-applied tape can cut seaming time by as much as 75 percent compared to traditional seaming techniques, reducing labor costs and allowing contractors to get to the next job faster.

Mule-Hide Pre-Taped EPDM is available in 14 combinations of sheet size, tape width, membrane thickness, membrane type and color, allowing it to be used in a wide range of projects. Tapes are available in three-inch and six-inch widths. Membrane thicknesses of 0.045 inch, 0.060 inch and 0.090 inch are available.

Ten-foot-wide rolls come in a two-pack configuration (two sheets per core) for faster roof loading and reduced waste and are ideal for use in situations where narrow-width sheeting is needed. Twenty-foot-wide dusted sheets are offered for use in large, wide-open projects.

The Mule-Hide brand has been one of the most trusted names in roofing since 1906. Today, the company offers premium-quality, high-performance, low-slope roofing products and systems that meet current and emerging needs of the design community with a strong focus on sustainable solutions.

TPO SYSTEMS KEEP ALLEN AIRCRAFT PRODUCTS, INC. FLYING
By Kate Baumann

Allen Aircraft Products, Inc.

For more than 60 years, Allen Aircraft Products Inc. of Ravenna, Ohio, has grown right along with America’s
aerospace industry. From the B-50 bomber to the Boeing 777, the northeastern Ohio company has supplied virtually every American commercial, military and private aircraft with fluid system products. Its Metal Finishing division provides
coatings for the Space Shuttle and other NASA and military programs.

When planning its most recent expansion — a 25,000-square-foot stand-alone building to house the Aircraft division’s assembly and test functions — the team at Allen sought a roofing system that would not only stand up to the area’s snowy winters and gusty falls, but also help reduce cooling costs during the summers, when temperatures can soar into the 90s... WELL-TRAINED ROOFING CREWS HELP ENERGY EFFICIENCY

Well-Trained Roofing Crews

Energy efficient roofing is no longer a trend, and has moved fully into the mainstream of facilities management in the United States. But the financial benefits and sustainability of energy efficient roofs can be compromised if repairs and coatings applications are done poorly.

That is why it is important for facility managers to make sure the contrac tors who install or repair roofing are properly trained. The new, energy efficient coatings available today require knowledgeable contractors and crews who understand, and are well-practiced in, applications that result in maximum longevity.

Steve Pfingsten, a branch manager for ABC Supply Company in Rockford, Illinois has seen first hand... More

Mule-HideROOFING SYSTEMS FROM MULE-HIDE® PRODUCTS CO. INC., WESTON SOLUTIONS INC. AND AMERICAN CONSTRUCTION METALS TO TOP MUSEUM OF SCIENCE AND INDUSTRY EXHIBIT

“Smart Home: Green + Wired” Exhibit to Highlight New Directions
in Sustainable, Eco-Friendly Living

BELOIT, Wis. –A new exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science and Industry will be topped by energy-efficient, environmentally friendly roofing systems from Mule-Hide® Products Co. Inc., Weston Solutions Inc. (Weston®), and American Construction Metals (ACM).

The roof is being installed on a fully functioning, three-story modular and sustainable “green” home being built in a park on the Museum grounds, located at 57th Street and Lake Shore Drive in Chicago.  The home will be the centerpiece of an exhibit titled Smart Home: Green + Wired, Powered by ComEd and Warmed by People’s Gas.  The exhibit will be open May 8, 2008 – Jan. 4, 2009.

Visitors to the home will be able to stroll around the Mule-Hide Living Roof™ featuring the patented GreenGrid® Modular Green Roof System.  Created by engineering, roofing and horticultural experts, the system includes lightweight GreenGrid modules that arrive at the site pre-planted and ready to install.  In the case of the Smart Home, 155 2’ x 2’ x 4” modules will be planted with Allium schoenprasum 'Forscate', Sedum album ‘Murale’, Sedum ‘Baileys Gold’, Sedum spurium ‘Fuldaglut’, Sedum sexangulare, Sedum spurium ‘John Creech’, Sedum spurium ‘Dragons Blood’ and Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina’.

The GreenGrid modules will be placed on top of the white, .045-inch thick Mule-Hide TPO membrane.  The membrane will be fully adhered to the Mule-Hide FR Deck Panel.
Adjacent to the Mule-Hide Living Roof will be a STAYLOC™ Architectural Metal System and matching coping trim from ACM.

Exhibit to Showcase New Options for Sustainable, Eco-friendly Living

Designed by Michelle Kaufmann Designs™ and built by All American Homes™, the 2,500-square-foot home will showcase exciting new directions in sustainable living and environmentally friendly technology.  During docent-guided tours of the contemporary-styled home, guests will be able to view the latest innovations in reusable resources, smart energy consumption, eco-friendly landscaping, and clean, healthy living environments.

“Concern over rising energy costs and climate change have certainly sparked interest in vegetative roofs,” Kauffman said.  “Visitors to the Smart Home will have an opportunity to see one first-hand and learn about how a vegetative roof system can help reduce cooling costs and manage storm water runoff.”

The Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit is principally sponsored by ComEd and People’s Gas.  Additional sponsors are American Honda Co. Inc., Dominick's and Motorola Foundation.

Roof Systems to Deliver Energy Savings, Environmental Benefits

Together, the roofing systems will reduce the need for air conditioning and the associated energy use, cost and emissions.  The vegetative roof will help insulate and shade the home.  The plants also will transpire, cooling the atmosphere around them.

The TPO membrane and metal roof and trim will be “cool roof” colors – white and slate gray respectively – that also will help keep the home cool.  Where exposed to the sun, they will reflect most of the sun’s energy, rather than transferring it into the home (a property known as reflectivity), and most of the heat that is absorbed will be released back into the atmosphere (a characteristic known as emissivity).

The Mule-Hide TPO system is CRRC® (Cool Roof Rating Council) rated and ENERGY STAR® listed.

The GreenGrid system also will help alleviate stormwater runoff – and reduce the associated costs – through the retention and detention of rainfall and detention of runoff from the roof.

The roofing products make heavy use of recycled and recyclable materials.  The GreenGrid modules are made of 100 percent recycled material.  The ACM metal roof and trim are made with 25 percent recycled material.  When the roof eventually must be replaced, the GreenGrid modules, TPO membrane and metal roofing and trim are all fully recyclable, keeping them out of the landfill.

The bonding adhesive used to secure the TPO membrane to the roof deck is water-based, resulting in low VOC (volatile organic compounds) emissions.  Factory-treated with a patented fire retardant using the proprietary BLAZEGUARD® process, the Mule-Hide FR Deck Panels are made with natural materials and contain no hazardous or toxic chemicals.

Exhibit Ticket Information

The Smart Home: Green + Wired exhibit will require an additional ticket with a specified entry time.  Tickets, which include Museum general admission, are available now and cost $23 for adults, $22 for seniors and $14 for children ages three to 11.  Discounts are available for City of Chicago residents.  Advance tickets are available online at www.msichicago.org.

MULE-HIDE EXPANDS AND ENHANCES LINE OF ASPHALT CEMENTS AND COATINGS

BELOIT, Wis. – Mule-Hide® Products Co. Inc. is enhancing its entire line of asphalt cements and coatings, including adding a new premium modified flashing cement and introducing its quick-dry asphalt flashing primer in a convenient aerosol spray.

The new MH #241 is an easy-to-apply premium flashing cement.  Appropriate for use with SBS modified membranes, it can be used as a night sealer or as an adhesive on vertical surfaces.  It also can be used for topical flashing details or repairs in APP modified bitumen roofing applications.  SBS modifiers ensure long-lasting performance without cracking.

For years, contractors have used MH #121 asphalt primer “from the pail” as a general priming coat before applying built-up roofing, waterproofing and other asphalt coatings to smooth surface roofs, concrete, cinder block, brick and metal surfaces.  Now that same primer is available in a spray version with an anti-clog nozzle, making application faster, easier and hassle-free.

Improvements also have been made to all other products in the Mule-Hide line of asphalt cements and coatings, which includes asphalt primers, mod bit adhesives and sealants, roofing mastics, aluminum coatings and protective asphalt coatings.  Contractors will appreciate the consistent smoothness and nice break off the trowel of the new cements and adhesives.  The new aluminum coatings are easier to stir and have high initial reflectivity.

All of the new and improved products will be available beginning April 1 at ABC Supply Co. Inc. centers nationwide.

The Mule-Hide brand has been one of the most trusted names in roofing since 1906.  Today, the company offers premium-quality, high-performance, low-slope roofing products and systems that meet current and emerging needs of the design community with a strong focus on sustainable solutions.  More information is available by calling (800) 786-1492 or visiting www.mulehide.com.

MULE-HIDE CELEBRATES A CENTURY OF TRUST

100th AnniversaryMule-Hide Products Co., Beloit, Wisconsin – The year 2006 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Mule-Hide brand. The company’s year-long recognition of this milestone was kicked off in February at the International Roofing Exposition in Las Vegas, NV. A special logo was designed and featured in the Mule-Hide booth as well as on the labels of bottled water handed out to booth visitors. Collectible Die-Cast Racecars were given out as booth prizes and throughout 2006 ads, promotional items and wearables will feature the 100th Anniversary logo that states, “A Century of Trust”.

There is an interesting story behind the 100-year-old Mule-Hide brand name. As the story goes… a four-horse wagon was stuck in the mud. To help out, another driver hitched two more horses but the six horses were still stuck. Then a wagon with two mules came by and the men replaced all six horses with the two mules. The mules dug down and pulled the wagon out. Their impressive strength was the inspiration for the name that has been trusted in roofing since 1906.

1906 was the year the original trade name was registered and the originator manufactured top quality roofing products with a reputation for long lasting performance. In 1985 the trade name was purchased to market top quality single-ply, insulation, and accessories with EPDM as the lead product. Mule-Hide low-slope commercial roofing systems quickly gained the reputation of performance to the industry’s highest standards.
In the late 80’s Mule-Hide In-Seam Tapes were launched making EPDM seaming fast and easy. Mule-Hide All-Purpose Bar was introduced featuring a sealant edge, no sharp edges, and exclusive timesaving design for anchor, batten, and termination bar use.
In the early ‘90s Mule-Hide developed Water Base Bonding Adhesive to meet the in-plant EPDM application needs of commercial modular factory-built structures. This highly successful product was then mainstreamed into the commercial roofing industry where Mule-Hide is still a market leader today. PVC and Hypalon were also launched to meet the need for high performance white roofs.

In the mid‘90s Mule-Hide became the leading EPDM brand name in the commercial modular factory-built structures industry and also began manufacturing Elastomeric Acrylic Coatings for Metal Roofs.

In the late‘90s Mule-Hide line extensions included Elastomeric Acrylic Coatings for Masonry Walls, Skylights, and Ponded Water Areas on Roofs. Cold weather Acrylic Coating companion products were also launched - Seal Fast Tape®, Fast Caps®.

In the early 2000’s another two line extensions were successfully introduced to turn black roofs white – A-320 FINISH for coating asphaltic substrates and an EPDM Restoration Systemä. Dec-K-ing® walkable PVC was also added to the PVC line.

TPO, “The Affordable White Roof” was introduced in 2002 as well as patent-pending Self-Bridging Mate-Lineä developed for multi-unit setup of modular structures. 2002 was also the year Mule-Hide coined the phrase  “Special Solutions Support “to communicate the extraordinary service level provided to customers.

In 2003 Self-Adhering Modified Bitumen manufactured with Adeso® self-adhesive technology was launched to meet the need for environment and insurance friendly modified installations. Mule-Hide is a market leader in this increasingly popular product category that enjoyed industry growth of 31% in 2005. Mule-Hide FR Deck Panel was also launched to meet emerging code requirements for modular structures requiring class C or A deck assemblies.

In 2005 Seal-Fast® Tape and Seal-Fast® Fabric Tape were introduced based on new MicroSealant™ manufacturing technology. These maintenance and repair non-butyl tapes feature built-in primer for an instant, watertight seal that withstands extreme temperatures.

In 2005, a Maintenance and Repair Solutions Selling Station and Slide Chart Tool were placed in 180 ABC Supply branches across the country featuring roofing mastics, asphalt coatings, emulsions, primers, aluminum roof coatings, Seal-Fast® Tapes, EPDM tapes, acrylic skylight coating, and acrylic masonry wall coating.

Mule-Hide products are available nationwide to professional contractors at ABC Supply Co. with over 300 locations.

MULE-HIDE INTRODUCES CLASS C OR A, FR ROOF DECK PANEL

Mule-Hide Products Co. Inc., Beloit, Wisconsin, introduces a fire resistant deck panel designed exclusively for the commercial modular roofing industry. The company’s design will allow modular manufacturers to meet emerging code requirements with a Mule-Hide FR Deck Panel, class C or A, which consists of a single OSB deck board with a proprietary fire resistant treatment. These new panels allow for easy, single-side, wet application of MH EPDM with MH Water Base Bonding Adhesive. “Significant time and labor savings are possible which will reduce system installed costs on a class C or A rated commercial roof deck assembly labeled and listed by UL. The new panels offer superior performance while reducing a five-step application into four,” explains Mule-Hide Modular Program Manager, Walt Griffin.

The single OSB deck board with fire resistant treatment replaces wood and gypsum. Manufacturers can consolidate purchases with a single vendor and reduce waste and disposal hassles. The simple, attractive system means there are no fasteners or plate patterns on the field membrane.

Mule-Hide fully adhered EPDM membrane using the new FR Deck Panels resisted uplift pressures to 240 psf. A modular building with this roof assembly can be located in coastal regions where higher wind resistance is needed.

The patented fire resistant treatment is factory-applied to OSB using the BLAZEGUARD® proprietary process. Under normal construction and application conditions, the treatment will not flake, crack, or peel and has more resistance to abrasion than uncovered wood. The treatment will not promote corrosion of nails, staples, or screws and remains breathable so it will not trap moisture. APA independent third party testing has confirmed that the MH FR Deck Panel is stronger than untreated sheathing, therefore, the rated roof assemblies do not require modification of existing design calculations. All panels carry span rating stamps from building code-approved agencies.

MH FR Deck Panels are made with natural materials, contain no hazardous, toxic, or harmful chemicals, and can be stored the same as stock OSB. “Unlike pressure-treated products, these panels are safe for landfill disposal. MULE-HIDE RELEASES SALES VIDEO AND APPLICATION VIDEO FOR PROFESSIONAL APPLICATORS OF THEIR ELASTOMERIC ACRYLIC COATINGS.

Mule-Hide Products Co., Inc., Beloit Wisconsin, has released two new videos on their Elastomeric Acrylic Coatings. A Sales Video and an Application Video. The seven and a half–minute Sales Video is an invaluable tool for selling a Mule-Hide application to building owners. It outlines the “relief” that comes with elastomeric coatings. “Heat relief, tax relief, cost relief, thermal shock relief, leak relief, and for metal buildings rust relief” is explained in detail. What it means for a coating to be “truly elastomeric” is presented, focusing on the properties of a high performance, VOC compliant, elastomeric coating versus aluminum coatings and other non-elastomeric coatings.

The sales video also reviews how Mule-Hide coatings help reduce urban heat islands, save energy costs, and extend the life of metal, single-ply, SPF, aged and non-aged asphaltic roofs, masonry walls, and skylights.

The sixteen-minute Application Video takes applicators step by step through an actual application of a Mule-Hide Elastomeric Acrylic Coating System for Metal Roofs. Equipment needed, cleaning the roof surface, priming, flashing penetrations and seams, and applying the finish coats are covered in detail with tips for a successful application.

Both videos are available free of charge to professional applicators.

A NEW GENERATION FAST ROOF - MULE-HIDE SELF-ADHERING MOD BIT.

Mule-Hide Products Co., Inc, Beloit, Wisconsin introduces another fast roof at the NRCA Convention in New Orleans, February 11-14, 2003. Mule-Hide Self-Adhering Mod Bit features the traditional SBS and APP contractors know and trust, that meets or exceeds the same ASTM standards. No asphalt bleed-out and mess, these commercial grade systems have years of field-proven performance.

Unlike “single compound” self-adhering products which consist of an SBS and adhesive blend compound on both the top and the bottom of the reinforcement, Mule-Hide Self-Adhering membranes are manufactured with Adeso™ “dual compound” technology. A ‘true’ APP or SBS is provided on the top (weathering) surface and a new generation, pressure sensitive adhesive is provided on the bottom of the reinforcement. These “dual compound” membranes offer ten times greater adhesion than “single compound” products, meeting ASTM D 1970 adhesion standards.

Adheres to eight different substrates.  No hot kettles, no open flames, and no solvent-based adhesives make this system ideal for low-slope or steeper slopes when a fast, clean, safe application is desired. Contractors enjoy instant bonding roll-to-roll and enhanced sealability offered by the SEALLap™selvage treatment. They also benefit from fast end laps and more reliable seams with the granule-free FASTLap® design.

“Elevator portability for high-rise building projects is an added benefit. Since it’s not hot work, these systems are also good for crew retention. No large equipment, few tools, and a short learning curve all add up to an appealing, insurance friendly system,” states Tim McFarland, Mule-Hide Technical Director.

Building owners will like the environmentally friendly attributes and such fast installation means minimal disruption to building occupants and operations. Mule-Hide products are available nationwide to professional contractors at ABC Supply Co.
